Play Out Underwear… Let’s Kickstart This Shit!

Hayy ya’ll! I had a blast in NYC and I’m going to post pics soon. But until then I wanted to give a shout-out about this new queer-owned underwear company called Play Out. I met one of their founders Abby at the Dalloway and she showed me a pair. Touching it felt like laying in a bed of kittens.

“You find a lot of underwear for men that they have a bunch of different colors, cuts, shapes; fun things to wear! But for women it’s either too girly… or boring.” You make a good point, Abby! GOOD POINT.

They need to raise $50,000 by May 8 to produce these things sooo if you go to Kickstarter you can support them! It’s like pre-ordering your future comfort and sexiness.

Mass production when done right is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

thatnekochick asked: Any clothing for a Genderqueer person who is top heavy? Without my binder it seems that a lot of people (mainly my coworkers) point out my boobs (in a disrespecting fashion, I add.). And that bothers me. I want to be able to put on a more androgynous appearance, clothing wise.

There are lots and lots of options for you! Just browse the androgynous tag. I find that button-ups/sweaters/vests/blazers minimize the appearance of a larger chest better than T-shirts. Blake’s post on Battling the DDD in Menswear might also be helpful. Will your clothes make you look so andro that people on the street are guessing your assigned sex? Maybe not. Can your clothes make you look absolutely fabulous and andro in other amazing ways? Totes.

But hey. It’s not cool that your coworkers are calling attention to your boobs. That’s sexual harassment. Hopefully having a quick chat with them next time it happens and asking them to stop will make them behave themselves. But if they don’t, you have every right to bring it up to your employer. One of the many lovely features of sexual harrasment is that we internalize it and think it’s our fault. Like that you have to hide your chest so that your coworkers don’t talk about it. It is never your fault, and regardless of whether you identify with your chest or not, you shouldn’t have to worry about inappropriate comments. If you do choose to do something about it, not only would you be improving your own experience at work, but you’d be educating them and setting up a safer environment for other people they encounter.

Legal Stuff, learn your rights
Here is a list of hotlines. You can call and ask for advice about how to talk to your coworkers

Hope you can find some sweet duds that suit you and get your coworkers to stop being assholes!

Anonymous asked: You've done a few posts on getting custom made shirts (from places like Ratio and Blank Label). I'm thinking about getting my first custom shirt made, but there are so many places that do it these days! What has been your best custom shirt ordering experience? Is there one company that you'd recommend over all the others?

If you are around New York City or plan on visiting any time soon, my highest recommendation is our tailoring consultant, Rae (aka The Handsome Butchwith Bindle & KeepYou can e-mail her at Rachel@BindleandKeep.com. I haven’t made anything with her yet myself, but she’s queer and amazing (not to mention, uh, gorgeous) so I’m sure she’d fit you for a fabulous shirt.

This could be you! (from thehandsomebutch.tumblr.com)

If you are not around NYC, and you fit within the S - XL range, I also highly recommend Androgyny. Even though they aren’t custom made, their shirts actually fit me better than any custom made shirt I’ve ever gotten.

I also had a really positive experience with both Ratio Clothing and Blank Label. The email exchange with Eric Powell of Ratio was incredibly in-depth and he took extraordinary care to make sure I got what I needed (and was very up-to-date on queer needs.) It also depends which fabrics and styles you are interested in. Ratio has some amazing new gingham and plaid options that I’m feeling a tad drooly over. However, Blank Label offers more options for collar, placket, cuffs, pockets, and buttons. Ratio also will allow you to send back a shirt for additional alterations as many times as you need; whereas Blank Label offers just one remake.

I don’t have any experience with bespoke women’s shirts, so I don’t have much advice on finding more feminine cuts. But I should add that Androgyny is really cut to look androgynous. Menswear companies like Ratio and Blank Label will have more masculine cuts that emphasize broad shoulders.

Anyone else have reviews to add of these or other custom shirt labels? Add them to the comments!

Anonymous asked: I was just turned towards this website and I love some of the stuff I'm reading but I haven't been able to find anything about incorporating what is considered girl/women's clothing into one's wardrobe, just a lot about incorporating what's considered men's clothing (which is not the type of androgynous look I am wanting). Does Qwear have anything like this or know where I might be able to find such information? Thank you in advance.

Thanks so much! Our posts about androgynous looks often incorporate both women’s and men’s clothing. Almost all my pants are gap women’s, for example. Check out the androgynous tag, and hopefully you’ll find some things you’re looking for! If not, I’d love more feedback about what exactly is missing for you so that we can try to cover it!

You might also like the personal stylings of Ex-Southern Belle (A.D.), Genderqueer Fashionista, and I Dream of Dapper. A lot of their outfits have women’s clothing worn in many ways that aren’t traditionally feminine, and some of which I’d consider androgynous.

Thanks for writing!

VEER NYC Fashion Show Pics!

I came to New York last night for VEER NYC’s first fashion show of their  curated androgynous clothing collection at the Dalloway. It was almost worth the treck just for the dapper-as-fuck crowd! I didn’t get any good photos of the actual fashion show, but I enjoyed their creative and artsy take on androgynous styles. I’m so excited to see what happens next with them, and hoping it includes some plus sized models. Their collection includes items from AndrogynyVerameatKollar ClothingClaudia LigariRiykaMörkna, and Sloane & Tate

I found an AQ (Adorable Queer) in my favorite J.Crew Boy’s sweater.

Of course, an amazing 48 hours in NYC with all the DQ’s needed to get balanced out by getting gender harassed by an employee when I tried to use the women’s bathroom in the Apple Store. But Apple, I forgive you, because you then allowed me to steal your internet for 2 hours AND charge my computer for the bus ride back. #Killinit

UPDATE 2/15: The profesh photos are up and look amazing!
