Boots For Bigger Feet!

Anonymous asked: I am a bigger girl, who normally dresses more femme with hints of masculine. I really want to wear boots but I don’t know where to look for ones that aren’t too butch but not horribly girly. I have found a few but they don’t fit. Side note, I have huge feet. If you have any suggestions I would be so happy.

Blake says: Howdy there! I have two pairs of Clark desert boots and a pair of Duck boots from L.L. Bean. I wear about a 9 in men’s and a 10/11 in women’s — so my feet are far from small. Combat boots don’t fit me well — my feet are too wide for most varieties. If you really want to wear combat boots and have wide feet like me, men’s are your best bet. While they are more expensive, they will fit you better. However, be careful with men’s combat boots — they get big and clunky reallll quick. Below are my picks for boots. Hope this helps!

Oakwood Suede Clarks desert boots-$109.99, available in a slew of colors and materials

L.L. Bean duck boots, 6 inch, $119 available in various heights (6in, 8in, etc) and colors

Peter Pan Collars, I Love You!

The beauty of peter pan collars has been calling out to me since the beginning of my fashion obsession (c. 2011). In addition to its vintage goodness, it is very school girlish — two styles I can’t live without. Dresses with collars also have an androgynous edge that I just adore.

I haven’t yet found any men’s shirts with peter pan collars. There are rounded collars which are also dazzling  as you can see in this Topman shirt  but they don’t lie flat on the shoulder in the same way. However, you can buy or make the collar separately (shown below) and add it to any outfit. I’d LOVE to see a more masculine or androgynous person get up on that. (Submit here!)

Until then, here are some of my favorite inspiration and buys for the femmes and femmewear admirers:

Think Fred Perry Has To Be Preppy?

This is definitely the least preppy context in which I’ve ever seen a Fred Perry shirt modeled. The suspenders and bleached hair and white socks makes the look so much more edgy than you’d think Fred Perry was capable. And on the subject of Dr. Martens, these oxfords are another great choice.

Dr. Martens: The Legacy Comes With A Price

Anonymous asked: I have been drooling over Doc Marten’s for a while now but have realized they are very expensive! Do you know which Doc’s are the best ones to get? And do you know of any sites or stores where they may be sold at sale prices? I want to save up for a pair but not really sure which place would be best to buy them from.

I know, right?? I was feeling some up the other day and then compared them to some H&M knock-offs, and just reminded me of how well these things are constructed. Their classic air-cushioned rubber soles will probably last a decade. And the sole is welted, meaning it has a strip of leather that is stitched between the sole and the upper part of the shoe:

Welting (source: dmusastore.com)

As opposed to other shoe constructions, which just glue them together. (Urban Outfitters, I will never forgive you for the time your sole FELL OFF MY SHOE WHILE I WAS WALKING.)

My current favorites are the classic smooth leather mid-height ones:

Navy Smooth Boots, available at dmusastore.com for $120.

And I’m also crushing on these felt ones:

Navy Felt 8 Tie Beckett Boots, available at ssense.com for $175.00

Past Qwearlings have recommended their Tobias boots and boys’ shoes, which I also thought looked fabulous on them. So in terms of which ones to get, that’s really up to your personal style.

I would probably try them on to get your size and then buy them on Ebay. To get them new, you’ll still be paying around $90. Used, I saw some on there for $40. I’d also see if you’re into any of the ones currently on sale on the Dr. Martens site. DSW has a few in good prices too. If you’re near a DSW, it never hurts to go in and see what shoes they have for sale in your size.

Queers and everyone: What are your favorite Doc Martens?

Dr. Martens Tobias: A Masculine But Not Too Rugged Boot

One of our readers shares their story about finding these gorgeous Dr. Martens Tobias for their girlfriend. Wonderful to hear from them, especially since I know how much you all love your boots:

“Hey gorgeous Queers! This is my sexy girlfriend Jennelle in her brand new Docs!!  We have been looking for new shoes for her for a really long time and we rarely buy anything for her. And even when we do, it’s usually second-hand. It felt really good to get these new shiny shoes for her because she works extremely hard and deserves them!

Conveniently, we live in Portland, home of the Dr. Marten’s Headquarters. We went in and got great service and were able to get exactly what we wanted. We have a hard time finding shoes that work perfectly for her and her presentation; we wanted something strong and masculine without being overly rugged. And they had to be comfortable.

So far we’re really pleased and I’m so happy to see the love of my life happy and comfortable in her sexy new boots! Here’s a link to the shoes if anyone’s interested.

She doesn’t have her own website, but we have a small catering business called Mint & Mirth and we love to make new friends in town (or visiting out-of-towners :)).”

Anonymous asked: Hello. I've seen your posts on women's shoes that look masculine, but I've always wondered where to buy boys shoes, or rather what are some good brands to look out for that sell boys size 5 shoes.

Good question! I’ve admired the boys shoes of J. Crew and Stacey Adams. We had someone model some Dr. Martens too.

What brands of boys shoes have worked out for you peeps?

Old Man Style

I can always count on my cousin Malila to bring me well-dressed queers with cool bed spreads. Kayla (http://diaryugh.tumblr.com/) likes to mix “old man style” with “a little drop of her sassy quirkiness.” She combines a Mr. Roger’s sweater, hipster skinny jeans, crimson socks, and dapper kicks. Since she lives in San Francisco, this outfit is good year round for keeping her warm/cold at different parts of the day. She also is the first person on Dyke Duds to wear boys shoes and it seems to have worked out quite well for her! I need to try that. I will now continue to look at all the beautiful Dr. Martens Kid’s shoes that I want to wear.
