Understand what I’m saying? Neither do I! Here’s My interview in English:

What is Qwear?

Qwear is a fashion blog geared towards the lesbian, queer, and trans community; as well as folks who are gender nonconforming. Since its inception in June 2011, Qwear has emerged as a community for dandy queers and fashion enthusiasts to ask questions, share experiences, and submit photos of their sartorial triumphs. It’s a blog that celebrates gender nonconformity and body positivity. It’s pictures of pretty shoes. It’s the love of my life.

Who is Sonia Oram?

I’m that kid in the back of the classroom with the big glasses who can’t stop drawing all over the assignment. I love anything visual, artistic, musical, and creative. I’m not myself if unless I’m in the middle of a project. I’m white, Jewish, female assigned, queer, genderqueer, and among the tiny percentage of the world that is privileged enough to get the chance to answer this question.

How would you define the concept of “queer fashion?”

I suppose technically the concept of “queer fashion” expands into an alternate universe every time someone queer identified gets dressed in the morning. I hope not to dictate what is it via Qwear, but rather to explore it according to what people are putting out as well as share my personal style aesthetics.

While queer fashion is limitless, I do believe that queers have our own unique experiences and identities that affect our clothing choices. Those of us who are feminists and environmentalists love a good thrift find and comfortable fit. We also like to break down gender norms through fashion, whether our presentations don’t fit the binary, or we choose to mess with the idea of what women/men are supposed to wear. In my circles, certain dandy menswear items — such as bow ties, suspenders, and vests — have become “markers” to express our queer identities.

We have read that you are a graphic designer. Would you at some point design fashion also?

I love the position I’m in now where I can promote all my favorite brands and help direct them on the community’s needs. I generally enjoy working from the marketing end and the blogger’s perspective, but I’m always open to new possibilities! I’ve been kicking around ideas with my friend over at Unbound Apparel about collaborating on a small line of casualwear that spreads a message about our values on freedom of expression, but nothing concrete yet.

How long do you take to pick your outfit in the morning?

Occasionally if I’m trying something new I end up with my entire wardrobe strewn over the room. Otherwise, not long at all. 10 minutes or less. But my wardrobe is still fairly small, so I don’t have that many options.

Do you think that lesbians have a different fashion style from straight girls?

I think that lesbians have unique experiences that affect their clothing choices (whether it’s conscious or not.) It’s not an either/or situation, but I think it’s nice for lesbians to have a fashion outlet outside of all the heteronormative blog spaces. The lesbian community has a history of feminism and other types of political activism that may affect their wardrobe and style choices, but this is not to say that many straight women don’t share a lot of the same values and styles.

Is it possible to achieve this look for an affordable price?

Absolutely. Some styles are more expensive than others, but many of my best-dressed queer buds are expert thrifters and their wardrobes look far more expensive than they are. I do recommend setting some money aside for nice shoes, if you have the capability. Shoes so often make or break an outfit, and the right pair can turn a budgeted ensemble into a fashion goldmine. I’ve had some of my best luck getting designer brand footwear marked down at TJMax or the Tannery.

What is the essential type of clothing to achieve the queer-look?

There isn’t one queer look, but there are plenty of essentials I could recommend for any wardrobe — like at least one pair of brown and black shoes, matching belts for each, and blazers.

Who is your favorite fashion designer?

I’m pretty much obsessed with all Jenna Lyons’ outfits and everything at J.Crew.

Can you give us some fashion advice?

Don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns in your outfits. People can get bogged down thinking they need to match everything. Also, button that collar button, baby!

What are the essentials for this summer?

Patterns, jewel tones, boat shoes, shorts, seersucker… NOT Hawaiian shirts!! (Omg… seriously Tommy Hilfiger?)

Blake’s Thrifting Success

Leave it to Blake to dress amazingly dapper for $75 total (price break-down below.) Both the tie and the shoes in this outfit were thrifted; other items grabbed on sale. If you live or work near a thrift store, try going in regularly and scanning the shoes and accessories. Once in a while, a real treasure will emerge for you to grab. If the shoes are worn down, you can get them refurbished and looking brand new. Put This On goes over all the valuable secrets in refurbishing shoes in their A Tale of Two Shoes post.

Shopping on a Budget: Plus-Sized Masculine Work Clothes

By Guest Blogger, Blake

Shopping for well-priced work clothes in plus sizes can be hard. No fear! I have some staple pieces that will keep your budget in check while also giving you a professional look. Here are some items to give your wardrobe a professional boost with inspiration for people of all shapes.

1. Can I say cardigans more than once????
Cardigans are a wonderful way to class up any outfit while providing comfort and an element of androgyny (men’s and women’s cardigans are virtually identical.) In addition, they cross over well from day/work wear to nightlife wear. I suggest buying a cardigan in gray, blue, black, and a statement color. I bought most of my cardigans from a Tommy Hilfiger outlet mall in Williamsburg, VA. However, if you don’t live near an out mall, I also like the cardigans over at Old Navy for the price point.

2. Vests!
I currently have two vests that I go to whenever I am trying to look more put together and professional. Vests are a great multi-purpose form of clothing. You can pretty much wear then with anything! Goodwill or a comparable thrift store usually has some great options in all sizes.

3. Collared Shirts
Just like cardigans and vests, collared shirts have crossover appeal. If you have trouble finding one that fits you, keep looking! They come in all cuts, sizes, colors, and patterns! You can survive off of owning 5 to 7 shirts — one white, another light blue, and 3 to 5 of your choice. Get some with button-down collars, and some without so that you have a range of of casual and fancy (button-down = casual.) The combinations of cardigans, vests, and collared shirts are endlesssssssss. I recommend Saddlebred collared shirts and Ralph Lauren for plus sizes; they fit me well. Just shop around for what fits you best.

4. Blazers
I have had GREAT luck at Goodwill. However, thrift shops are a mixed bag. Lane Bryant has some really nice blazers. The arms fit well enough that I can bend them and the body of the blazer fits perfectly to my curves. I suggest that you look out for a sale; Lane Bryant can be pricey (I went during a sale and got two blazers for $90, not bad). A blazer should fall below the waistline but not go past your bum. The sleeves should be in between the knuckle and the wrist.

5. Pants
Buy pants cheap and get them tailored. I would shoot for khakis and a light weight dress material. Try to stay away from the Poly and Ester twins. I find that slim leg pants are the most flattering look for any size. Have your tailor adjust your pants leg to about 9.5 inches to create the look (trust the tailor with the number of inches). I buy pants from all over, mainly Tommy Hilfiger on extremeeeee markdown and Old Navy during the holiday deal season. See my post about tailoring pants for more info.

Look for pants with these cuts:

6. Shoes!
Shoes can make or break an outfit. No holes, no tears, not too broken in for the office. Out of all of the above basics, I recommend that you spend the most money on good quality shoes. I like Clarks desert boots and Bass Weejuns for the office.

Queering the Prep: Where are my Boats?

I’ve recently made a few more fantastic purchases: a couple Tommy Hilfiger boy’s polos, and a Ben Sherman backpack on sale at ASOS. I felt that my wardrobe was lacking in bright colors, so I took the plunge and got some orange to go with all the navy I already had. Plus, how can I be a true Prepster without bright colors? All I need now is a lakeside house in New Hampshire and some boats…

Diminishing Curves With Menswear

Anonymous asked: I am trying to create a much more gender neutral look for myself and am having a hard time because I am moderately chubby with distinctly feminine curves. I can’t do the skinny jeans + button down because it just accents those curves. If I go too baggy I just look like a slob who doesn’t care what she’s wearing. I’ve even tried wearing a binder with poor luck. Is there any sort of outfit that would diminish or obscure my curves but is still cute and comfy? Thank you!

Blake says:

I have the exact same problem. I find that women’s V-neck sweaters look good with just about any bottom (jeans, khakis) for a nice fall look. I just bought a Tommy Hilfiger sweater with a vintage varsity look to it. Their sweaters tend to be very gender neutral and can be worn over a button up or a crew neck T-shirt (I recommend buying their merchandise from an outlet mall — it is much less expensive).

For a comfortable summer look, try a men’s short sleeve button down with khaki shorts or pants. It won’t hug your mid section and comes to a nice stop just below the waist. Men’s V-necks are simple but stylish. In addition, they have an element of androgyny. Also, if you don’t like the way that your jeans fit, try men’s jeans or khakis. Men’s jeans come in many varieties (women’s jeans tend to come in tight and less tight) such as slim that will look much less gendered. Tommy Hilfiger also has some flat front chinos. Here are some pieces for outfit ideas!

Ivy Argyle V Neck Cotton Sweater, available at Tommy Hilfiger for $68

Striped V Neck Sweater, available at Tommy Hilfiger for $69.99

Men’s Patterned Slim-Fit Shirts, available at Old Navy for $19.94

Men’s Slim-Fit Jeans, on sale at Old Navy for $22.00

Men’s Classic V-Neck Tees, on sale at Old Navy for $7.00

My Single Speed

Summer is the time to zip around Boston on my single speed and dodge the buses that I so gladly am not on. And who said that bikes couldn’t be a fashion accessory? The Torker’s bare bones style fits perfectly with my aesthetic, and I’m willing to nearly pass out every time I go up a hill to keep it that way.

We want to see how you’re getting around this summer! Especially if there is not gasoline involved. Submit your pics here, and don’t forget to tell us where you got the wheels/pogo sticks.
