Introduction to Raw Denim

By Guest Blogger, Liann

I think we all have some major struggs associated with finding the perfect pair of jeans. Typical women’s and men’s jeans never satisfied my needs. I didn’t like the thin material used with women’s jeans and they either accentuated my curves if I wore them above my hips, or displayed far too much backside if I sagged them. I also didn’t like the cut and style of typical “men’s” jeans: they were too baggy, had too much rise, and fit too tightly around my hips. And, no matter how I wore any of them, they never looked particularly clean-cut.

But a new-found love for jeans came back full throttle four years ago, when I permanently switched to wearing raw denim.

What is raw denim, you ask?

When you buy a pair of blue jeans, overwhelming chances are that they have already been treated in some way outside of the “cotton+indigo+weaving+sewing=jeans!” equation. Any type of fading, distressing, bleach spots, or frays are all purposely done by the producer to make them feel softer and look cool. Even stiff-feeling dark wash jeans have probably been hit with a resin coating to prevent color loss.

pre-distressed Levi's jeans

These jeans are the big kahuna when it comes to pre-distressing (from us.levi.com)

Raw denim (also sometimes called “dry denim”) does away with all of this. They generally have no stretch, feel as stiff as cardboard, and are a deep, near-black indigo when you first try them on (although they’ll bleed sky blue on everything). With raw denim, you’ll want your jeans to be anywhere from a bit tight to soul-constricting for the first few days. The differences in immediate comfort and freedom of movement between “jeggings” and non-stretch dry denim are very quickly apparent, but after a couple of weeks your jeans will begin to mold and fade perfectly to your body.

Since there’s no treatment to keep the indigo in the fabric, people generally avoid washing their jeans for as long as possible. A lot of people swear by not washing for 6+ months to develop a high-contrast fade, but that’s not really necessary. You shouldn’t wash them every day, but every 30 wears isn’t a problem either. I personally wear them until they start to reek, at which point I throw them in the bathtub with some detergent.

My own Gap Skinny Selvedge, left (4 days, 0 washes) and heavily patched APC New Cure, right (1+ year, 3 washes)

A lot of raw denim is also selvedge, meaning that it has a self-closing end on the outseam. Contrary to popular belief, selvedge edges (or lack thereof) don’t guarantee quality, but they do generally correlate with a higher quality final product because they are more expensive to produce. If you have jeans with a selvedge edge, it’s common practice to show them off by rolling up your jeans a bit.

Ellen Degeners Selvedge

The quickest way to this dapper, androgynous look is probably APC. Lots of their fits are branded as unisex, which is virtually unheard of in the denim world and is proof of their ability to look fantastic on just about anyone.

If you’re looking for men’s raw denim that doesn’t accentuate curves while fitting well, look at the skinniest fits and lowest rises you can find. Also, you shouldn’t be concerned if your sizes are all over the place. When I was trying on two different Naked and Famous brand men’s jeans in the same size but different cuts, one was far too loose in the waistband but I couldn’t button up the other. This is just a side effect of not knowing exactly how, and where, they will sit on your body.

On that note, TRY THEM ON before you buy! I cannot emphasize this enough, especially for people with curves looking at men’s denim. Raw denim is finicky and expensive. I also recommend this for women’s raw denim, although Steven from Railcar Fine Goods helped me a lot in finding a well-fitting pair of Viper X001’s via e-mail. Also, don’t be scared if you have to make the jeans skinnier below the knees to achieve the perfect look – even “skinny” men’s denim doesn’t compare to the amount of tapering you are used to with women’s jeans. Denim Therapy offers this service for $40. As with most things, fit is most important.

I know I’ve just made this seem like a lot of expensive work, but well-fitting raws will blow any jeans you currently own out of the water— I promise. Here are suggestions for skinny, low rise, and/or women-specific jeans. If you want an easier time with fitting, try the ones with some stretch:

Less Expensive (under $100):

Gap Skinny Selvedge
Uniqlo Slim Selvedge
Unbranded Skinny Selvedge
Levi’s Shrink to Fit

Expensive ($100-$201):

Naked and Famous Weird Guys/Skinny Guys
APC Hipster/Petit Standard/New Cure
Railcar Fine Goods Viper
3Sixteen Slim Tapered Fit

Really Expensive (you don’t want to know):

Samurai Geisha
Dior Homme Raw
Skull Jeans Linda
Pure Blue Japan Women’s Slim
The Flat Head Balder
Real Blue Japan Slim Tapered

Asian Menswear Brand Options for Petites

Thanks to the anonymous reader who encouraged us to do this post! - Sonia

Padded Vest, at YesStyle for $98

Tired of the boys’ section? Asian menswear is another great option to consider. Due to Asian MAAB’s being generally smaller, Asian menswear tends to be sized smaller all over, including in the chest and hips. So if you are petite but curvy, you will probably have better luck buying international/US and getting a tailor to alter accordingly. In general, I would recommend Asian menswear for queerfolk with slimmer builds or who are less curvy. That being said, the rule of “fit shoulders and hips, the rest can be tailored to fit” still applies.

For those who don’t live in Asia or speak any of their languages, there are some setbacks. Many Asian designers run small businesses, or just prefer to make sales out of storefronts, and thus do not ship internationally. If you ever find yourself in Asia, the best thing you could do for your wardrobe is to spend a little time doing some research and shopping around.

As for buying Asian menswear online, I find that a lot of websites tend not to be in English. Here are some sites that are in English and ship internationally:

UNIQLO: Japanese brand, does good quality preppy casuals and basics
RAOUL: European styling, on the expensive side but very lush fabrics. Currently no mens clothes available for online purchase, but here is a list of  retailers.
YesStyle.com: Asian style menswear, many popular brands
Saku Japan: Similar to YesStyle, has an office in Brooklyn, NY
Domanchi: Singaporean label, makes both casual and workwear
store.uktsc.comSuits in Asian sizes, website in Japanese and English

I have bought UNIQLO and Domanchi clothing from their brick and mortar stores and can personally recommend these brands.

Asian style

You might have noticed that there seems to be a strong Korean/Japanese fashion influence in much of Asian menswear, and that will be reflected in what is available for order online. The general style tends to be less dapper and more “street” fashion. A notable exception is menswear from Thailand, which can lean towards being very preppy. Presently, I have no links to Thai websites in English that ship internationally, so if you know of any, please let us know!

Bespoke Tailoring

Don’t know where to go on your next long haul holiday? Might I suggest taking a trip to Bangkok, Hong Kong, or Shanghai? There are many tailors in these cities that are very good at what they do, and they generally do it for a lower price. If you’re going to be there on holiday anyway, you may as well get some shirts made. Avoid shops that proclaim “3 suits for the price of 1, plus free tie!” and try to go with someone who speaks the local language, if at all possible.

Happy shopping!

Pink Autumn

Kim is back with some more fabulous pink menswear. This outfit features the unique Harem Pants, which taper in to the calf. They a very popular style for all genders, but I love the androgynous way in which Kim chooses to sag them here. Kim says, “This photo was shot during a photography project. I named this photo ‘Pink Autumn’.”

that-lovable-ginger asked: Hi there! I've only just really begun to understand that I'm genderqueer, and as a result I've started realising that sometimes I love the idea of dressing masculine. The problem is, I don't own any masculine clothing and don't really know where to begin! My other problem is that I have long hair, which means that I find it difficult to have a masculine appearance (I'm a bit tentative about the idea of cutting my hair short though, because it's such a big change). Please help? :)

Congratulations! Check out A.D.’s blog. They are genderqueer too, and have amazing long hair: exsouthernbelle.tumblr.com. Also check out this post they wrote: Queer with Long Hair.

It can be hard diving into a whole new wardrobe. Are you interested in incorporating masculine pieces into your current wardrobe? If so, you may enjoy this post: Mixing Mens and Womens Pieces. If I was going to buy my very first masculine clothing item, it would probably be a basic button-up. Finding my first men’s button-up that fit really well was an amazing feeling.

I also did just a lot of trying things on and exploring what felt right. I found that the best places to do this are where people aren’t gender policing the customers. So you can comfortably explore and try on many things without feeling like people are watching you. I felt really comfortable in department stores that were either crowded enough that people didn’t notice me, or where sales people weren’t lurking around. It was also easy to bounce back and forth between the mens and boys’ sections. Stores with all gender dressing rooms are also great places to trying on men’s clothing. Dapper Q made a list of stores that have them: Abercombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, American Apparel, Banana Republic, Express, Gap, H&M, Hollister Co., Old Navy, Uniqlo. (From Dressing Rooms: Legal, Physical, & Emotional.) I’d also like to add that some J. Crews and Club Monacos have them.

Good luck and have fun!

Dapper Fall Outfit

N is back with another delicious outfit for the fall! Notice how she leaves the top cardigan button undone. Most cardigan wearers do it these days to look relaxed, but it’s also a great tip for queers who may be also coping with men’s cardigan proportion issues. LOVE the colors in this outfit too. Blue and grey bow tie; grey cardigan and navy pants? Yum.
