AnnMarie and Anne’s Dashing Wedding Attire

A Bicycle Built For Two is one of my new of my new favorite sources for queer formal wear inspiration! A beautiful display of carefully picked lesbian and queer wedding photos. I was scrolling the other day and found this dashing couple, AnnMarie & Anne:

Obvi I had to get in touch with them and ask them about their outfits.

AnnMarie (suit, bow tie) told me, “I knew what I wanted to look like on my wedding day from the time I was little. I am obsessed with English styled suiting from the mid century. I am also equally obsessed with classic menswear. I wanted my look to be dapper and polished and really show my personality. I was born a 67 year old man and I really wanted that to show through.” She wound up with this amazing vintage, bespoke suit made in 1967, from the Etsy shop, Brightwall, and then she got it tailored.

Anne told me that she prefers simple dresses, and had surprising luck at David’s Bridal! ”I wanted a dress, but I hate shiny fabric, beads, sparkles… Basically most wedding gowns. They just aren’t me. I wanted simple and clean. I found a lot of beautiful vintage dresses that were all too teeny tiny, so against my instincts, we checked out David’s Bridal. And we found the dress! It’s shantung, which is more matte, and structured (learn something new every day). And it has pockets!! Overall I wanted to feel like myself, and for me that means simple and classic, but with fun details.”

Elbow Patches with Sepia Palette

Teresa is back with possibly my favorite fashion element of the year: elbow patches. The oatmeal colored sweater is just the midtone of several shades of brown, including the yellow pants as the lightest. This sepia color palette is a beautiful way to create a retro 70’s feel.

GQ Cover Material

I discovered another queer with impeccable style. Like, why isn’t she on the cover of the queer equivalent of GQ? (I know there are queer magazines, but the photo style reminds me a lot of the features GQ puts out. Also, GQ is always my shorthand for gender queer, which makes me laugh.) The type of bow tie she’s wearing is a lot slimmer. Good style to try out, because wide ones can look a little goofy sometimes.

Your Color Palettes

Anonymous asked: My friends and family always make fun of me for matching colors. It is true i do tend to match color alot to the point where i even color co-ordinate my underwear lol. But i don’t know how to clash colors successfully :/ How can i pick items that go together without having to worry about how the colors match?

A.D. says:
Have you ever seen color swatches? Or “palettes?” If you haven’t, they’re collections of colors across the spectrum that go well together. With clothes, palettes get even more interesting because there are layers and textures. The deal is finding palettes that you like; these can range from 2 colors (pink and blue) or many (like dark blue, light blue, coral, forest green, light green, mustard, etc.). The important thing with color and clothing is remembering the visual statement that a given outfit gives. Your outfit shouldn’t say, “I know my colors and I can match!” Your outfit should be a reflection of you. It should convey your unique sense of self. Pick items that reflect you and work well together. Start with the “palette” and see where it takes you!

Sonia says:

Check out the website Color Scheme Designer. It automatically creates color palettes.  You can play around with it and get ideas for color schemes. Then just observe outfits you like and take note of the colors, shades, and materials. And think about why it works. Also, don’t be afraid to take risks!

This outfit makes use of the complimentary colors blue and orange. (source: onemanstyle.com)

This outfit uses colors that are close together  blue and green  and then adds a dash of yellow as a highlight color. (source: 22g.tumblr.com)

Wearing Awesome Socks Like a Grown Up

Anonymous asked: I’ve seen a lot of people pairing awesome socks with normal sneakers and even dressier shoes. How do you know when it matches and when you start looking like a 5 year old who just started to dress herself?

image

(source: www.hushhush.kz/)

Mandy says: Socks are interesting. A colorful pair can add splash, but they can also take away from the “professionalism” of your overall look. But they can add to an outfit, yes? Yes! If you want to look fabulous, good socks are one easy way to get there.

Five-year-olds wear socks with garishly obnoxious patterns/graphics, like Spongebob Squarepants or frilly lace or bunnies or something. Sartorialists (read: extremely fashionable/tasteful dressers) can get away with a certain amount of garish; think neon or really, really bright. On certain people, this works. On others, it doesn’t.

image

I personally wear subtle socks. (patterns: argyle, small stripes, polka dots, nautical themed, etc., colors: greens, blues, pinks, tans.) These patterns and colors go with my overall style; they don’t detract from anything else I’m pulling off, and they add to my outfit when I sit down and cross my legs (and my pants come up).

Take away point: go for what you can get away with (or with what you feel like rocking that day). If you’re unsure, stick with a semi-neutral pallet with traditional patterns. You can always bump-up your sock game if you want. Don’t wear media graphics, except for skulls, anchors, shields, etc.

Sonia says: My attitude towards socks is like Michael Pollan’s attitude towards diet. If someone else pulled it off, copy what they did! Sometimes we don’t know exactly why certain things work and others make us look like 5-year-olds, but we can take inspiration from the world around us. So if the French have been eating cheese with breakfast and wine with every meal for centuries, maybe there’s something to their diet worth emulating! And if you saw a hot queer on the street rocking polka-dot socks with dress shoes… try it out! You already have a little evidence that it works.
