Qwear Is Boycotting Abercrombie & Fitch and Their Friends For Being Douches

Let’s be real: I care about dressing well, I care about other queers dressing well and feeling good. And that’s why I have this blog. If I wanted to have a blog about only supporting companies with good practices, well, that would be a different blog. We could call it “Fair Trade Queer.” Or something. Spinoffs welcome.

The only brands I’ve been boycotting on Qwear are Urban Outfitters and their affiliate Anthropologie. (Which you can read about here.) If I boycotted every brand that had bad practices, I’d be pretty limited in the Looking Pretty Pepartment.

But I’m now adding Abercrombie & Fitch and their affiliates (Hollister, and some other brand I haven’t heard of called Gilly Hicks) to the list of brands I will no longer promote in this lifetime. Because of this:

UPDATE 5/16: While the following video does a great job out outlying the issues with A&F, a few folks alerted me that it’s problematic. I completely agree with that article, and considered deleting the video altogether from this post. I decided to leave it here for discussion, but would discourage anyone from actually joining his campaign.

You can still model them in your submissions, but I won’t link to them. I will also include a disclaimer: “Abercrombie & Fitch actively discriminates based on class, size, and appearance. For similar brands, try Aéropostale and American Eagle Outfitters. Thoughts? Proposed edits? Contact me.

For a long time I was promoting A&F because I loved their jeans. But the zipper recently broke on them anyway. Along with all my trust. *wipes tear.*

Your Questions; Your Answers! All On Qwear Forum

If you’ve submitted an anonymous question recently and it hasn’t been answered here, check the Qwear Forum! I posted a whole bunch of questions there that we won’t be able to answer on Qwear. I already love the advice that’s shown up.

More about the forum.

Introducing: Qwear Forum

I wanted to give the Qwear community a space to ask each other questions and discuss fashion quandries without me spamming you all the time here! So I created a new Tumblr called Qwear Forum (<— click to follow). Questions that are perfect for this space are:

  1. Anonymous questions for which I need only point you to a previous Qwear post
  2. Questions for the whole community (i.e. “have any of you tried Diesel underwear before?” or “know any good places to shop in Berne?”)
  3. Anonymous questions for which I need more information before I can help you
  4. Anything else we don’t have time to answer. As long as they are comprehensible, related to fashion, and otherwise deemed appropriate, I will post them over there!

Already added a bunch from our ask box. Hope you find this useful!

Hey Phat Queers!

I’d like to interrupt my regularly scheduled programming to tell you about my friend Karen’s blog about fat phobia: phatally.blogspot.com. Her thoughts and explorations have raised my consciousness around all the ways in which our society stigmatizes fat. And it’s gotten me thinking more about how important it is for us to celebrate our bodies, rather than degrade them. She even addressed androgyny in this post! I’m her anonymous friend :) Regardless of your size, I think you’d love her blog. To quote her, “Stigmatizing fat hurts every one, regardless of what their body looks like.”

In honor of Karen’s efforts  and all my readers  I want to shout out a special invitation to all curvy/big/fat/plus sized folks to SUBMIT photos of some fabulous outfits! Can’t wait to see all of your lovely selves.

Guest Blog for Qwear!

Wanna increase your blogger street cred? We are looking for fashionistas with unique experiences to share with the Qwear community! Topics of interest are:

1. Are you gender fluid, or do you love fucking with gender? How do you balance budget and wardrobe size when buying clothes across the gender spectrum?

2. Transfeminine dyke style suggestions and tips, in particular for those with larger builds.

3. Are you an expert thrifter? Give us your scoop on thrifting and filling out your wardrobe in a socially conscious way.

4. Queer make-up tutorial (liquid black cat-eye liner, anyone?)

5. Personal account from a masculine presenting female assigned person of color, and experiences within your community around gender presentation and style

6. Queers who move: Did you move to a new place and develop a new style from doing so? What were the styles of your previous place vs. new one, and how did the queer scene around you affect it?

7. Personal account from a straight identified woman with a love for menswear and/or dressing androgynously

Send proposals for these topics or ideas of your own to Sonia at oram.sonia@gmail. Even more awesome if you can include a writing sample or link to something you wrote. I’m excited to hear from you!

Introducing: Qwear

Hello, my lovely followers!

I’m announcing a NAME CHANGE to my blog. It will now be called Qwear. Since my blog’s inception, it has grown to include so many more identities beyond Dyke. Plus Qwear is just better.

Soooo things might be a little cray cray as I go around changing the name, but then everything will go back to normal only better.

The domain for now is qwear.tumblr.com. However, the old Dykeduds.com domain will begin forwarding to this one in an hour. Even dykeduds.org will forward. I’ve basically wired the entire internet to bring up my blog no matter what. So don’t fret if you don’t remember.
