The Eleventh Doctor’s Professorial Stylings

By Guest Blogger, Sophie Lee

Bow Ties are Cool.

That is the mantra of the Eleventh Doctor, the titular character of the BBC show “Doctor Who,” and is probably enough to convince you to dress more like this man. The abundance of warm earth tones and the professorial vibe of the doctor’s look lends itself well to autumn. You can mix and match different aspects of the doctor’s ensemble for your own seasonal look.

The Eleventh Doctors Professorial Stylings

The Bow Tie: I’m pretty sure the intro said it all. Whenever he can help it, the doctor is wearing a bow tie. His go-to is a narrow red bow tie, although he also wears a blue one on occasion. And for really special occasions he’ll break out the white silk bow tie.

How to incorporate this into your look:  For your everyday wear, chose wool or linen bow ties rather than silk ones; in a dark shade, with a narrow bow (batwing or a thinner semi-butterfly). Narrow cloth bow ties are more casual but equally dapper. Or for double the doctor fashion points, opt for a tweed bow tie. For formal affairs, go white silk.

High quality bow ties are hard to find sometimes. Vintage clothing stores are a good place to start, and I love the selections at High Cotton. Pictured above is the Darden Woolie Bow Tie.

The Jacket: The eleventh doctor wears a well-fitted tweed jacket with elbow patches. Elbow patches are one of those delightful details, effervescent of your old college professor.

How to incorporate this into your look: Tweed jackets are an excellent addition to any fall wardrobe. See the tweed jacket selections of TopmanHouse of Fraser (men’s), The Outnet, and Modcloth (women’s). Or just go with the elbow patches! Many brands like H&M, Zara, and ASOS, to name a few; sell sweaters, cardigans, and blazers with elbow patches. Or if you like sewing, add patches an old sweater or blazer for a personality revamp! Here’s a DIY elbow patches tutorial

The Details: The doctor tends to wear slim-fit shirts with button-down collars. But the beauty lies in the details. His shirt is often a muted shade of his bow tie color. And for another nice touch, his suspenders always match his bow tie.

A second really great element of his shirts are the contrasting cuffs. Although the only time they are fully visible is when he gets dressed, you can seeing them peaking out though his sleeves throughout the series. The doctor’s cuffs are a darker shade and ringed, similar to the cuffs on a letterman jacket. It’s a nice little burst of color and a fun detail.

How to incorporate this into your look: The exact shirt the doctor wears was made and sold by UK designer Paul Smith. It was part of a limited edition collection in 2010 and is no longer available. But for a similar style, look for the colors of your accessories in a muted tone. Also for slim fit shirts with cuff or collar contrast details. Try Claudio Lugli, Hugo Boss, Dockers, Brooks Brothers. Finally, don’t underestimate the value of a good pair of suspenders! His are a simple clip on; easily picked up at Topman or American Apparel.

Elbow Patches with Sepia Palette

Teresa is back with possibly my favorite fashion element of the year: elbow patches. The oatmeal colored sweater is just the midtone of several shades of brown, including the yellow pants as the lightest. This sepia color palette is a beautiful way to create a retro 70’s feel.

Queering Dapper

Anonymous asked: Hey, so I just found your blog, and hey! it seems to be one of few really thorough queer style blogs on the whole internet. Which is pretty amazing. I think your blog is great. my question however is about the recurring reference to “dapper”, I know the definition (i.e neat and trim in dress, appearance, or bearing), but i really would like your interpretation, in regard to queer style that is. AND why it is important?

Kind words much appreciated, friend! What a great question. Thanks for making me think about my word choices and why they are important to me. It’s definitely one of those words that has a lot of meanings and you can’t quite pin exactly what it means to every individual.

(source: closeupandprivate.com <— dope blog of close up fashion)

“Dapper” to me denotes a classic and traditional style, in to addition dressing smart and looking put together. Its use was originally for cis men who were thought of as gentlemen. Already by using it as queers or gender non conforming individuals, we are changing the meaning of the word and making it our own. So that’s one reason why it is important.

(source: styleforum.net)

I do associate specific clothes and looks along with the word, like brogues, bow ties, vests, brown leather, suspenders, fedoras, elbow patches, tweed, suits, button-ups tucked in, flat caps, pocket squares.

(source: deltoroshoes.com)

I also think it is the only way to describe exactly the way some of us want to look; smart, put together, classic, with clothes that fit extraordinarily well, but not necessarily for a formal event. I think it airs away from the more conservative ways of dressing that you might think of when just talking about formal wear or business casual clothing. The closest equivalent probably being dandy.

(source: juleofthenile.blogspot.com) <— awesome post and about gender bending clothes.)

And I mean, it’s such a FUN word! Better than smart, put together, clean cut, or anything else you could think of to describe the look.

One Love

When I saw these two Australian cuties floating around the Tumblrverse, I had to find out what they were wearing. They mix vintage and dapper styles (elbow patches!!) with swaggerific snapbacks and T-shirts.

Someone recently wrote in asking about whether you can mix hats with button-ups. Well, here is your answer!

Menswear that Will Keep You On Your Toes

Anonymous asked: I’m seeing all these guys’ pictures from prom and they’re all in the generic black or white suits with a vest the color of their date’s dress. I want to look snazzy or dapper or some other wonderful adjective at my prom, without looking like someone copy-pasted my outfit. Any suggestions?

I want this for you, too Anonymous. And what’s the point in being queer if you can’t have a little fun? Here are some ideas that I bet the cis straight boys at your school haven’t thought of:

Color: Having a non-black suit can pretty easily eliminate the predictable factor. (source) Riviera Club has some beautifully detailed yellow pants like this on sale for $72 (clicky)

Elbow patches: Sexy professor look. Nuff said. (Source unknown. If you took this picture please tell me.)

Unique Dress Shoes: Dress Slip Ons, wing tips, saddle shoes, contrast soles, or oxfords of other colors are a great way to spice things up. The lady reelers above are the 1901 ‘Saddle Up’ Oxfords at Nordstrom

Pattern mixing can make for a really bold and dynamic outfit. The key is to mix big patterns with smaller ones. Check out the pattern mixing tag for more inspiration. (source

Elbow Patches Are Sexy

My experience in H&M is pretty much the same every time: I rummage around the men’s department until I find the one extra small in the store. Dyke shopping is hard work but rewarding. Since buying this sweater, 2 to 4 women have felt up my elbow patches. One of them asked if it was consensual.
