(from: etsy.com)

After I featured theLOVEstich’s beautiful floral lapel pins (Springtime Mini Lapel Boutoneirres), the artist behind the knit beauties sent me one as a gift. I’m in love with it, and plan on wearing it any chance I get! What’s more, she’s assisting the Qwearlings of the world and offering us free shipping until July 1st on domestic and international orders with coupon code “QWEAR.” Enjoy!

DIY Whipstitch Pocket Square

If you’re like me and becoming a handy dandy, you’ll love our new DIY series column by recent college grad and fashion enthusiast Melissa Audrey. - Sonny

DIY Whipstitch Pocket Square

Between the blooming spring season, ever-trending floral-mania, and all-out Gatsby madness, I couldn’t think of a more relevant DIY than these cute little whipstitched pocket squares.

THINGS YOU’LL NEED:

image
  • at least 9” x 9” of floral fabric, or any print that suits your fancy
  • one skein coordinating embroidery thread
  • embroidery needle
  • scissors (or rotary cutter if you have one!)
  • iron
  • measuring tape/ruler/cutting board

STEP ONE

image

Cut your fabric to approximately 9”x9”. Standard pocket squares come 14”x14”, but those are way too big for my little pockets and I hate how it looks when my chest is all bulky! If you tend to fit well in standard-size menswear, you might opt for a 12”x12” template (closer to market standards), but if you’re fun-size like me then go with the modified 9”x9”!

STEP TWO

image

Wrong side facing up, fold one edge over approximately ½”. Press the edge with your iron to reinforce crispness – this is very important! Next, diagonally cut the corner of the flap off. Repeat on the remaining three edges.

OPTIONAL: If you’re really picky about neatness and don’t like the idea of leaving the edges raw, you can double-fold your edges and press so that the raw edge is hidden.

STEP THREE

image

Now that our edges are pressed and corners clipped, your fabric should look like this (left), and be a little over 8”x8” in size. Flip the piece over (keeping edges folded), and press the right side of the fabric a couple of times to make sure your creases stay.

STEP FOUR

image

At each corner of your fabric (wrong side facing you again), fold the corner of the top flap under itself in a diagonal. This will give each corner a neat little point! Repeat on all corners.

NEXT – it’s time to begin sewing! Cut a piece of embroidery thread about 4 ½ yards long (150” or 13’). Thread it through your embroidery needle and double the length; your total length should now be about half the original 4 ½ yards. Knot the end of the doubled thread.

Put on your favorite show, lay back in bed, and stitch that sucker all the way around! NOTE: Please do not get so comfortable during this process that you fall asleep in bed and poke yourself in your sleep.

STEP FIVE

image

Once you are done stitching all four edges, finish your stitching on the wrong side of the fabric and tie off your string (you should be finishing at the corner you started at). Be sure to snip off the excess thread. FINALLY it’s time to fold your pocket square!

Tuck your pocket square into your best button-up shirt and get ready to head out in style. This also doubles as a back pocket hanky - especially great on those hot summer days when you don’t feel like wearing a dress shirt! Don’t forget to make some for your friends. Try metallic embroidery floss for added pizzazz!

Happy DIY-ing, folks!

‘til next time,

Springtime Mini Lapel Boutoneirres

I need to talk about my new dandy obsession: mini lapel pins. These are most commonly seen at weddings on groomsmen and the like, but I plan on taking after Lover Of Stories and wearing them all the time. Where you have a lapel, you can have a lapel pin.

GabiFresh Swimsuits for All (Unless you’re larger than size 24)

I’m enthralled by these new plus sized swimsuits by my new blog crush Gabifresh! I love the bright colors and the way they fit. I mean, damn. If I were a lady/wore lady clothes, I’d be rockin that day and night.

You can get them at swimsuitsforall.com for $68.

Queer processing time: how do you feel about the fact that the company only goes up to size 24? It seems a little hurtful to call the line “Swimsuits for All” but then not deliver what they promise. I know it costs more money to produce clothes with more fabric, but it seems to me that as size activists, they’d want to, well, be size activists. And not leave anyone out of the equation, or make anyone feel invisible for existing out of their size range.

But hey, there are hot fat people running around in galaxy suits now. And that’s fucking awesome. Maybe they could just change their name so they don’t claim to represent everyone.

Interested in your thoughts. Comment in the comments.

Qwear Is Boycotting Abercrombie & Fitch and Their Friends For Being Douches

Let’s be real: I care about dressing well, I care about other queers dressing well and feeling good. And that’s why I have this blog. If I wanted to have a blog about only supporting companies with good practices, well, that would be a different blog. We could call it “Fair Trade Queer.” Or something. Spinoffs welcome.

The only brands I’ve been boycotting on Qwear are Urban Outfitters and their affiliate Anthropologie. (Which you can read about here.) If I boycotted every brand that had bad practices, I’d be pretty limited in the Looking Pretty Pepartment.

But I’m now adding Abercrombie & Fitch and their affiliates (Hollister, and some other brand I haven’t heard of called Gilly Hicks) to the list of brands I will no longer promote in this lifetime. Because of this:

UPDATE 5/16: While the following video does a great job out outlying the issues with A&F, a few folks alerted me that it’s problematic. I completely agree with that article, and considered deleting the video altogether from this post. I decided to leave it here for discussion, but would discourage anyone from actually joining his campaign.

You can still model them in your submissions, but I won’t link to them. I will also include a disclaimer: “Abercrombie & Fitch actively discriminates based on class, size, and appearance. For similar brands, try Aéropostale and American Eagle Outfitters. Thoughts? Proposed edits? Contact me.

For a long time I was promoting A&F because I loved their jeans. But the zipper recently broke on them anyway. Along with all my trust. *wipes tear.*
