Diana says: My wife and I have several outdoor weddings to attend this spring and the dressier side of my closest is mostly business wear plus a black blazer. I tend to wear a mix of ladies/gents for fit reasons (tad over 5’5 with a slightly “curvy” figure) but had high hopes of finding a well fitting gents jacket I could get tailored. After several weeks of thrifting/interneting/outlet malling in search of a lightweight blazer, I gave up on finding something I felt handsome in from either side of the shop (too short/long/bunching/80’s shoulders and the Paul Ryan look all come to mind). I had moved on to “chinos, button down, bow tie” when I tried Banana Republic and was floored by how great I felt in their ladies sleek suit. Unlike some of the other ladies suits I tried, the fabric on this feels substantial, the button hits closer to my navel and it has a functional front pocket (pocket squares!) I’ll be taking a trip to the tailors but was so pleased with the off-the-rack fit (plus some hem tape magic courtesy of the wife). I wore it to a wedding the following day.

The Way Weddings Should Be Expo

I did a thing today! I went to a gay friendly wedding expo in Portland, ME representing Fourteen. I got to see our clothes for the first time, try them on, walk in a wedding fashion show, and talk to hotties. My only regret was the Holiday Inn Breakfast Buffet. OMG DON’T DO IT.

Sorry I don’t have pictures of the fashion show. I was busy waiting back stage in a closet full of the well-dressed queers.

Surprise surprise! LK Weiss of Jack Tarr helped to put together the fashion show! So naturally within 5 minutes of meeting them we were in a photobooth together.

I totally have this on my fridge now.

This is serious stuff, you guys! Pay. Attention.

Indochino + Qwear Shopping Event, Mon Apr 15 5-7 PM

image

Exciting news! Indochino loved my post so much that they invited us to come enjoy wine and fittings with them on their final day in Boston, Monday, April 15! Come join me from 5 to 7pm to get fitted, drink wine, and hang out.

RSVP to sonia@qwearfashion.com or on Facebook
If you would like to get fitted, they ask that you please book an appointment during that time slot as well to reserve your spot at indochino.com/boston

Indochino also wanted me to clarify that they only make traditional men’s suits, (boxy, padded shoulders, etc.) and not traditional women’s, even though they will fit them to anyone. If you are looking for a more androgynous look or for something that hugs curves, they might not be for you. (But you should still come hang out with us anyway!)

I can’t wait!!

See you then, ‘mos

Anonymous asked: I'm a "bridesmaid" in a wedding this fall. My best friend from 6th grade is the bride; we're still close but no longer BFF. She's totally down with me wearing a suit, but I'm bored with black and grey. I want to match the color of the bridesmaids dresses: bright orange, pink and blue (poppy, azalea, and cobalt, shall we say?) Any leads on where a teensy queermo can find a bright colored suit with menswear tailoring that doesn't look like something a career girl would wear to the office? Thanks!

Topman has amazing suit colors and their sizes will fit all the tiny queermos! - Sonia

Indochino’s Traveling Tailor is Ready for the Queers!

Indochino Traveling Tailor Boston

I was blown away by Indochino’s beautiful Traveling Tailor shop in Boston that I visited with Fit For a Femme last week. It was like the Apple store of suits. Priced in the $400 range, they offer the softest fabrics and choices of lapel style, number of buttons, pocket style (note: pocket flaps can always be tucked in. May as well get them and have the option!), linings, rounded vests, and contrast button stitching, to name a few!

Here are some photos from their shop, all courtesy of Fit For a Femme! The femme’s wife M got fitted for a suit as well, so stay tuned for part 2 of the Indochino experience on FFAF’s blog

The traveling tailor is in Boston until April 15th as part of their North America tour. Since I love Indochino and I want to make sure you all feel comfortable going to them, I gave them a heads up that some of you might visit one of their traveling tailor stores. All you have to do is tell them you are from Qwear, and they will ask you for your pronouns and preferred language for the fitting. They are are super excited to have you there. Don’t live in Boston? They might visit your city soon. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

If you are able to make it, let us know how it goes!

Tell it to a Butch on KVRX + Behind the Scenes Pics!

Last Tuesday night, March 26th, at 8pm CST, dapperQ contributor Joelle Zigman and I did a special one-off edition of the KVRX (student-run radio from the University of Texas at Austin) advice talk show, Tell it to a Girl, called Tell it to a Butch. We answer questions about engagement rings, what to wear to prom, coming out to your mother, and how to do animal prints right. Conclusion? Butches make everrrrything better. Disclaimer: every time I pause it’s because I’m looking for an alternative word to “faggy.” Thanks so much for having me, Joelle!

Additionally, our Three Leaves Menswear videoshoot last Sunday in Brooklyn went really well! Here are some behind-the-scenes photo with me, our tailoring consultant The Handsome Butch, and Katrina Casiño (Autostraddle writer). Many thanks to dapperQ for setting it up! My favorite part of the day was tripping and falling into THB’s arms. (Wait, day? My favorite part of this whole week.)

This is my “I’m not completely dying of joy being next to you right now,” pose.

I have some more updates coming your way soon, so stay tuned!

*Sigh*

Oh, was I saying something?

Anonymous asked: Hello! I recently bought a vintage (1930s) tuxedo: The high-waisted pants fit well but need to be taken in, and the coat needs a bit of adjustment. I’d love to achieve a feminine-slanted androgynous look with the ensemble, a la Marlene Dietrich, but am unsure how to find a tailor I can trust with the work. (I’m in NYC.) Any advice on how best to describe what I want, or how to find the right tailor?

THB says: Yes! We’ve worked extensively with Laura & Melinda’s in the Lower East Side. I suggest you bring a few pictures of the exact fit and have them pin your tuxedo until you’re pleased with the mockup. Take special care to ensure the shoulders and jacket length are proportional with your frame. And be mindful that extensive alterations (especially the shoulders) can sometimes exceed the cost of the original suit.

Cufflinks, Tie Bars, and Mini Bow Ties For the Well-Dressed Dandy

Cufflinks, Tie Bars, and Mini Bow Ties For the Well-Dressed Dandy

By guest blogger, C. Haber Dash

Let’s face it: living the dapper life can be hard on the bank account. We all drool over those bespoke suits and super sexy wingtips. But not everyone can make a habit of acquiring such finery on a regular basis. Perhaps you have a few nice items but, rely —  like most of us — on the chance treasure found at the local thrift. That’s certainly how I roll. So how do I take my few essential nice outfits and make them new and dashing with every wear? I shake it up with the little details: the accessories that dazzle and stun the admirer each and every time!

Cufflinks, tie bars, and mini-bow ties are a few of the many accessories that can set the dapper chap apart. And in fashion forward NYC, it’s nice to be the one who stands out from a city of well-dressed hoi polloi. A great outfit can look new and fresh with every wear if proper attention is paid to accessories. There’s no doubt about it: tie bars are back! (Why they ever fell out of favor is beyond me!) Besides being dapper as fuck, tie bars are great conversation pieces — particularly vintage ones that come in a variety of styles. Simple and classy ones can be found at most department stores and shops these days, and they can be quite elegant. But I encourage you all to take a gander at the local thrift for some classic pieces that usually come with a story.

vintage tie bars

I picked up the gems pictured above on a day trip up the Hudson. Just an hour or so away from the city, a small town like Cold Spring or New Paltz can offer a treasure trove of affordable ($3-$5 each) and unique accents pieces for the well-dressed dandy. The main streets of these little hamlets are lined with antique shops full of this stuff. Where else can you find a tie bar of a boy and his dog on a raft, or barber scissors; or my favorite: the telegraph?

Of course, my love for the little things in life includes cufflinks too. If you’ve got a shirt with French cuffs (if not, get several stat!), then you will want a nice collection of cufflinks. They don’t have to cost a fortune either. If the pickings are slim in your neck of the woods, head out of town for a day and pillage small-town America where demand for such finery isn’t quite as intense, and the prices can be dirt cheap! Besides looking sensational, they are a tool of seduction. Sit across from your date, elbow on bar/table, chin resting on palm, cufflink exposed, and watch them melt.

My thoughts about mini-bow ties are a bit more daring, as the clip-on tie debate still rages. In principle, I am opposed to clip on ties, with one exception: the mid-century mini clip-on bow tie. Unlike the typical butterfly bow tie — which deservedly continues to reign supreme — these little guys are more akin to the less ubiquitous straight/thistle bow. Popular through much of the mid-twentieth century, and measuring anywhere from 2 ½-5 inches long and 1-1.5 inches wide, these clip-ons should be worn with confidence and perhaps a sense of irony. Simply stated, they are just too damn adorable and wearing one may result in endless fawning and cheek pinching (wearer be warned). Also, it’s nice to get an old timey tie box to put these little treasures in.

When I am not fretting about the future of humanity, or why my kitties meow and cry all the time, thoughts of other important matters such as how to accent my outfit tomorrow, or what my next adventure of rural thrifting/antiquing may bring makes my heart whole again. With a solid collection of tie bars, cuff links, and mini bow ties, I can rest assured that with each new day, I will be able to assemble a fierce new ensemble that is both empowering and complimentary to my budget. And I hope you can too!
