Lesbro Lessons: How to Wear Snapbacks Without Looking Like a Tool

image

(from this post)

Anonymous asked: What do you think about snapbacks? Tips on wearing them without looking douchey?

A.D. says: Wearing a snap-back requires a few things, including swagger and a slight smirk. Both can lead to douchey-ness, BUT you can totally rock a snapback without looking like an asshole. You just gotta strike the right balance. Snapbacks, for starters, should be paired with something other than shorts and a tank top. I think snapbacks go with most outfits, even a blazer and tie (but, like, outside the office, obvi). In a snapback, avoid the ‘I’m so cool’ face, in which you never smile, have your earphones in, and look miserable. You will look like an asshole; instead, SMILE.

That’s it.

AnnMarie and Anne’s Dashing Wedding Attire

A Bicycle Built For Two is one of my new of my new favorite sources for queer formal wear inspiration! A beautiful display of carefully picked lesbian and queer wedding photos. I was scrolling the other day and found this dashing couple, AnnMarie & Anne:

Obvi I had to get in touch with them and ask them about their outfits.

AnnMarie (suit, bow tie) told me, “I knew what I wanted to look like on my wedding day from the time I was little. I am obsessed with English styled suiting from the mid century. I am also equally obsessed with classic menswear. I wanted my look to be dapper and polished and really show my personality. I was born a 67 year old man and I really wanted that to show through.” She wound up with this amazing vintage, bespoke suit made in 1967, from the Etsy shop, Brightwall, and then she got it tailored.

Anne told me that she prefers simple dresses, and had surprising luck at David’s Bridal! ”I wanted a dress, but I hate shiny fabric, beads, sparkles… Basically most wedding gowns. They just aren’t me. I wanted simple and clean. I found a lot of beautiful vintage dresses that were all too teeny tiny, so against my instincts, we checked out David’s Bridal. And we found the dress! It’s shantung, which is more matte, and structured (learn something new every day). And it has pockets!! Overall I wanted to feel like myself, and for me that means simple and classic, but with fun details.”

50’s Jazz Style Done Hipster

Ok, so cute queers are literally everywhere on my Tumblr dash. But Olivia stood out to me because of her mix of traditional 50’s jazz style with hipster. Her undercut with an overflowing fauxhauk that looks like it comes from a full head of hair is absolutely stunning.

Suede Sneakers for a Tomboy

Another ensemble I so need to try, from our friend Teresa. This is a really nice way to work in a button-up with a more casual outfit. And I love those blue suede sneakers she’s wearing  way more low key than your usual athletic sneakers. A similar alternative to UO are the PF Flyers Center Lo Suede

Ambitious Tomboy Style

A blogger named Katherine decided to do a photoshoot in her brother’s clothes. Isn’t she adorable? Aren’t these color and pattern combinations incredibly badass? I mean who would ever think of wearing a denim jacket over a blue oxford. She’s making me consider wearing things I would never consider wearing.

I also love how many Indie and non-US brands I’m learned about from her. She’s got brands from Tokyo, Melbourne, Copenhagen, the UK… (Although, I did NOT realize Navajo appropriation was also a thing in Japan). For those of you interested in vintage frames, Moscot is a vintage style eyewear company with an online store and locations in New York.

Musician Grunge

It’s still hot where Ashley lives, but she threw on a Beanie to start bringing the fall style. I’d categorize this look as musician grunge, with a touch of prep. She just needs a beat up guitar in her hand and she’ll be golden.

Ada from Imaginary Fashion Bloggers

An incredible artist named Alice wrote to me with an unusual and creative submission. I’m rather blown away. She made up some characters that she draws in actual clothes she’s been coveting/ checking out. One of her characters, named Ada, is into a lot of menswear and gender-nonconforming styles. She said she takes a lot of inspiration from Qwear for Ada’s outfits. I think this is such a beautiful way to explore fashion and gender without spending any money. Imagine if you could draw yourself in the clothes you wanted to wear, or if you could draw the haircut you’d be dreaming of before going for the plunge.

Beyond Jeans and a T-shirt

Anonymous asked: My girlfriend and I love going shopping, but I’ve noticed that she always buys the same things (regular skinny jeans and plain t-shirts). How can I give her an outfit that will spice up her wardrobe a bit but won’t go too far out of her comfort zone?

A.D. says: Instead of an entire outfit, maybe you can give your girlfriend a few statement pieces that she can incorporate into her wardrobe. I think an awesome pair of colored jeans (like mustard yellow or dark crimson), a casual blazer (maybe a cotton or corduroy one?), and a graphic tee (OR A BUTTON-UP, because we all know I love my shirts…) would be really easy, simple pieces to incorporate into what she already has.

Also, hats. Hats are the most fun.

The Allure of Newsboy Caps

I recently got a question from an anon asking how to wear newsboy caps/flat caps… and my mind went into a spiral of fashion and wonderfulness. I think the better questions is: what COULDN’T you wear newsboy caps with? Ok, maybe they wouldn’t go with a frilly dress or a leather biker outfit. But beyond that, they’re pretty much embedded into every aspect of the fashion industry. Poeple are femmeing them up with lipstick and purls. Hipsters are thrifting them and wearing them with plaid and boots. Golfers and country clubbers are pairing them with argyle and preppy styles. And really cute queers are being really cute. But what’s new.
