Everlane: Soft, Luxurious, and Easy on the Wallet

Everlane sweatshirt review

I think we all secretly wish we could look as put together in a plain white tee as Kim Stolz, or as put-together in a soft pullover as we do in our bow ties and summer dresses. Everlane’s Men’s French Terry Sweatshirt in Slate (pictured above) is already becoming one of my staples. You can see and feel the quality when you put it on. A once frumpy style turned elegant and/or dapper. I can wear it around the house or dressed up.

Just as Fit For a Femme’s exclaimed “Everlane has turned me into a girl who loves wearing t-shirts!” I’ve been turned into a queer who loves wearing casual basics. My Tommy Hilfiger Boy’s tees have served me well, but are not nearly as nice quality as Everlane’s XS tees, which they were also generous enough to send along for this piece:

everlane tee review
The Men’s Crew White

What makes this tee different from all other tees? Well, for one thing, you’ll never get a tee this nice for $15. For another, it’s incredibly soft, and they tested it on tons of people, ensuring the best fit for all. Every cycle, they make little adjustments based on reviews.

I showed off Everlane’s button-up and tote bag hereThey recently came out with these switch-buckle belts with 4 interchangeable buckles. So basically it’s like 4 belts in one. Brills. Like many of you, I am sad that they discontinued their bow ties. But they told me during our chat that they want to master the basics before branching out too much. And I respect that.

As a gift from them to you, whoever signs up through this here link: EVERLANE/QWEAR GIVEAWAY will get entered into a drawing to win $50 store credit. Now that’s TRULY luxurious.

Indochino’s Traveling Tailor is Ready for the Queers!

Indochino Traveling Tailor Boston

I was blown away by Indochino’s beautiful Traveling Tailor shop in Boston that I visited with Fit For a Femme last week. It was like the Apple store of suits. Priced in the $400 range, they offer the softest fabrics and choices of lapel style, number of buttons, pocket style (note: pocket flaps can always be tucked in. May as well get them and have the option!), linings, rounded vests, and contrast button stitching, to name a few!

Here are some photos from their shop, all courtesy of Fit For a Femme! The femme’s wife M got fitted for a suit as well, so stay tuned for part 2 of the Indochino experience on FFAF’s blog

The traveling tailor is in Boston until April 15th as part of their North America tour. Since I love Indochino and I want to make sure you all feel comfortable going to them, I gave them a heads up that some of you might visit one of their traveling tailor stores. All you have to do is tell them you are from Qwear, and they will ask you for your pronouns and preferred language for the fitting. They are are super excited to have you there. Don’t live in Boston? They might visit your city soon. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

If you are able to make it, let us know how it goes!

My New Gay Fashion Job At Fourteen

image

Ladies, Queers, and Fagettes! I’m excited to announce that my fashionisto career is expanding beyond the blogging platform. Fourteen, a company that makes formal wear for queers, hired me as their marketing assistant. Their inventory has grown since my last post about them, and I’m excited to jump on board. I’ll be learning more about fancy clothings, hitting up wedding conventions, and getting you exclusive updates on Fourteen’s growth as a company.

They just got our new website launched. Check it out! My favorite latest addition to their collection are the Tapered Wool Tux Pants.

I don’t expect my role with Fourteen to affect my position as your Qwear blogger, in terms of content or posting frequency. Whenever I talk about Fourteen I’ll include a note at the bottom explaining that I also work for them. If you have any questions about my new position, come say hi at sonia@qwearfashion.com.

Your favorite fancy queer-pants (except for THB),

Dog Pattern Ties and Other Queer College Party Attire

Anonymous asked: hi sonia, do you have any suggestions for college/house party attire?

image
(from: instantces.blogspot.com/)

Hi Anon, what kind of college/house party? Are we talking the rager I went to sophomore year that took until Wednesday to recover from, or the jello shot contest I won Junior year that took someone’s eye out? Since I’m the expert, I’ll just cover all of them.

At college parties, you want to wear things that you can get things spilled on. You don’t want to have to worry about your $700 red strappy-thing shoes while you’re out dancing and flirting. So that’s requirement number 1.

Requirement number 1 part 2 is that you want to wear things that you wouldn’t be devastated if you lost. You’ll probably throw something in a pile of other people’s shit while you’re dancing and sweaty and drunk, and might not be able to find it when you leave. If you are bringing layers, make sure everything you might take off is not of special value to you. On that note, wear cute underwear.

Optional: lezbereal - you’re going to these parties to get laid and/or make friends. So you want to wear something distinctive and fabulous that will help people come up to you and start conversations. It might be a tie with dogs on it, a hat, a sequen dress, a “Butch, Please!” shirt. My friend Abby sometimes goes to parties in a blue wig, as “Maddax.” AND SHE’S NOT EVEN QUEER, YOU GUISE.

I think any one of these would make fantastic college party outfits, but please post more in the comments, queers! Photo reply: activated. - Sonia

Cufflinks, Tie Bars, and Mini Bow Ties For the Well-Dressed Dandy

Cufflinks, Tie Bars, and Mini Bow Ties For the Well-Dressed Dandy

By guest blogger, C. Haber Dash

Let’s face it: living the dapper life can be hard on the bank account. We all drool over those bespoke suits and super sexy wingtips. But not everyone can make a habit of acquiring such finery on a regular basis. Perhaps you have a few nice items but, rely —  like most of us — on the chance treasure found at the local thrift. That’s certainly how I roll. So how do I take my few essential nice outfits and make them new and dashing with every wear? I shake it up with the little details: the accessories that dazzle and stun the admirer each and every time!

Cufflinks, tie bars, and mini-bow ties are a few of the many accessories that can set the dapper chap apart. And in fashion forward NYC, it’s nice to be the one who stands out from a city of well-dressed hoi polloi. A great outfit can look new and fresh with every wear if proper attention is paid to accessories. There’s no doubt about it: tie bars are back! (Why they ever fell out of favor is beyond me!) Besides being dapper as fuck, tie bars are great conversation pieces — particularly vintage ones that come in a variety of styles. Simple and classy ones can be found at most department stores and shops these days, and they can be quite elegant. But I encourage you all to take a gander at the local thrift for some classic pieces that usually come with a story.

vintage tie bars

I picked up the gems pictured above on a day trip up the Hudson. Just an hour or so away from the city, a small town like Cold Spring or New Paltz can offer a treasure trove of affordable ($3-$5 each) and unique accents pieces for the well-dressed dandy. The main streets of these little hamlets are lined with antique shops full of this stuff. Where else can you find a tie bar of a boy and his dog on a raft, or barber scissors; or my favorite: the telegraph?

Of course, my love for the little things in life includes cufflinks too. If you’ve got a shirt with French cuffs (if not, get several stat!), then you will want a nice collection of cufflinks. They don’t have to cost a fortune either. If the pickings are slim in your neck of the woods, head out of town for a day and pillage small-town America where demand for such finery isn’t quite as intense, and the prices can be dirt cheap! Besides looking sensational, they are a tool of seduction. Sit across from your date, elbow on bar/table, chin resting on palm, cufflink exposed, and watch them melt.

 vintage cufflinks

My thoughts about mini-bow ties are a bit more daring, as the clip-on tie debate still rages. In principle, I am opposed to clip on ties, with one exception: the mid-century mini clip-on bow tie. Unlike the typical butterfly bow tie — which deservedly continues to reign supreme — these little guys are more akin to the less ubiquitous straight/thistle bow. Popular through much of the mid-twentieth century, and measuring anywhere from 2 ½-5 inches long and 1-1.5 inches wide, these clip-ons should be worn with confidence and perhaps a sense of irony. Simply stated, they are just too damn adorable and wearing one may result in endless fawning and cheek pinching (wearer be warned). Also, it’s nice to get an old timey tie box to put these little treasures in.

vintage mini bow ties

When I am not fretting about the future of humanity, or why my kitties meow and cry all the time, thoughts of other important matters such as how to accent my outfit tomorrow, or what my next adventure of rural thrifting/antiquing may bring makes my heart whole again. With a solid collection of tie bars, cuff links, and mini bow ties, I can rest assured that with each new day, I will be able to assemble a fierce new ensemble that is both empowering and complimentary to my budget. And I hope you can too!

The Unbuttoned Suit Vest

Anonymous asked: recently, i’ve been on the lookout for a vest and today i tried a couple on at h&m. they didn’t look great buttoned (because of the whole i have boobs issue) and for them to work for me i would have to get them tailored. they looked alright unbuttoned though, and i was just wondering if you had any tips for the unbuttoned vest look. thanks!

PROTIP: Make sure everything else you’re wearing is well-fitted for you. Make sure your shirt isn’t too big or your pants aren’t too tight.

PROTIP: Look super dapper everywhere else. You want people to know you’re purposefully not buttoning your vest.

Androgyny: YES, I found the perfect shirt!

Androgynous shirt

Those who’ve been following Qwear for a while have seen my array of button-ups. I’ve brought multiple brands to the tailor and have even taken the custom-made route. But this number by Androgyny is one of the best fitting shirts I’ve come across. I’ve enjoyed my other shirts a lot, but when I tried this on I went, “oooooh, that’s what it should feel like!” It didn’t require any adjusting or pulling to fit over my curves. And like most of you, I probably would have never known what was possible in a shirt that could fit my body and gender expression until now.

Due to the high production costs of manufacturing in San Francisco and being a start-up who produces limited editions of each style, Androgyny’s shirts are priced at $125. Though many of you have graciously informed me that you don’t have that kind of cash (I think my favorite line was: “this blog is run by a privileged idiot”), if you do have the means or are saving for a special occasion, your money will be well spent. And, if nothing else, it helps to know that shirts made for androgynous folk are now in existence and will someday be more easily acquired!

Androgynous shirt

The name of the company describes the shirt exactly: it hides my curves without creating a more masculine shape than I want. The bottom comes out to accommodate hips but not in a way that’s at all noticeable. l’m certainly not a shirt construction expert, nor can I account for all the body-types other than my own — but from the way it feels I can tell they’ve done their research on the needs of androgynous people with curves. To top it off, their shirts feature contrasting inner collars, sleeves, and buttonhole thread. All their collars allow ties. Some people may find the colors in their current collection “feminine,” but you know how crazy I go over colorful menswear.

I also appreciate that they button on the right side like men’s shirts. Many dry cleaners charge sometimes up to 3 times as much for women’s shirts, so this will save you money. Pretttty cray. Also, these days maids aren’t expected to dress their Victorian mistresses, so it’s not really necessary to keep the left-side button practice.

Androgynous shirt

This Crisp White Magenta shirt and 4 other colors are available at www.wearandrogyny.com in sizes S-XL. I hope all the dissatisfied andros get the experience of trying on one of these babies at least once. For now, they are only available online, but offer free shipping and free returns. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates on their growing color and size options.

Thanks, Androgyny!
