(Affordable!) Masculine Shoes For Small Feet

Lots of smaller footed folks have asked for masculine shoe recommendations in the non-sneaker shoes arena that won’t break the bank. I’ve picked up a few more ideas since my last post in May

My biggest recommendation is to do the thrifty thrift! Men’s feet used to be smaller, so there are some gorgeous vintage finds out there for next to nothing. Blake got these bad boys for $4Bobby from Boston had an incredible selection of smaller men’s shoes that ranged from 30 - 60$. If you make visiting your neighborhood thrift store a regular activity, something fantastic will pop up.

Onward! I chose pretty spring colors, because I can:

Bass Women’s Ely Shoes

I’ve had these Bass bucks from Bass for 2 years now, and they are still one of my favorites and one of my most vesatile pairs of shoes. They fill an in-between space from casual to fancy. They come in several colors and contrast soles. Retail is $69, but you can usually snag them on sale or on Ebay for $40 or so. (See me wearing mine here!)

Loafers are never a bad addition to your wardrobe. Equally at home at the office or with some shorts on a summer stroll. Women’s Hayden Loafer, $85 at Sperry Top-sider.

imageEvery fashionisto needs at least one pair of fashion boots! Clarks Women’s Desert Boots, $94.95 at Infinity Shoes

I always dislike how boy’s shoes have a rounder toe and chunkier heels than men’s. As if they still need help walking past toddler-hood. However, J.Crew has some of the less obnoxiously shaped boys’ shoes in the most fabulous of colors! These are the Kids’ Suede Bucks with Contrast Sole, $98. They’ve also got pretty nice wingtips for $118, though I’m less convinced of the chunky design in the dressier shoe.

These are so pretty! Can’t speak to their quality. But… WANT! Halogen® ’Lindy’ Oxford, $99.95 at Nordstrom

Cole Haan has some fabulous choices this season. I tried a pair of their Skylar Oxfords and found them very comfortable! They would make for a great dress shoe. The leather sole feels like it would last for ever. The black ones are currently on sale for $179.95. They also have the Alissa Oxford (pictured above) — the same thing with a rubber sole a different kind of leather (nubuck) in brighter colors. Those are now running as low as $88 on Amazon.

In other news I crossed these Steve Madden oxfords off the list when I tried them on IRL. They feel like a flimsy piece of felt glued together by a child. There’s women’s clothing for ya.

Am I missing anything? Add it in the comments!

Transitioning Into Spring with Blake

It was so gorgeous in Boston today!! 50 degrees, no clouds in the sky So since it’s like basically HOT OUT, I asked Blake to share with us how she transitions into a spring wardrobe. Hope some of you find this useful when getting together yer outfits! - Sonia

By Blake

You don’t need to start from scratch when the seasons get warmer! For spring I only make two significant changes to what I wear:

  • Lighter fabrics— so no wool, flannel, tweed, etc.
  • Lighter colors— (I’m in love with pastels just like every other student at UVA, sorry not sorry)

I still wear jeans (vans and cuffed jeans= classic) and collared shirts in the summertime (usually not at the same time) depending on how hot it is.

The weather in Virginia can be pretty temperamental (Buah hah!); 70 degrees one day and 50 the next. However, the outer layer goes away-sweaters, cardigans, and heavy jackets. To replace a big coat, I’m in love with the windbreakers/ parkas I’ve seen around for when it gets chilly.

In addition, I love incorporating a busy pattern into my spring outfit. Because it is often too hot to wear a sweater or cardigan, patterns can add another layer of complexity and flare. I’m talking polka dots (and top button swag), florals (“florals for spring…groundbreaking”), zig zags, pin-up girl patterns; go crazy. When done right, patterns show that you put some thought into your outfit.

Timex weekender watches $35 at Amazon

I roll my sleeves up most of the time during the spring. Great opportunity to accessorize with some bracelets and a watch. You can find more affordable bracelets from ALDO or Etsyimage

I also wear lighter colored shoes in lighter fabrics-usually low tops. So Sperry’sVans, etc. Happy spring dressing!

Steampunk Outfit

I found this outfit on Tomboy Femme and convulsed in my seat a little bit so I decided to contact the girl wearing it. Her name is Patrice Lighter, and it turns out that she has reason to dress up all awesome because she’s a singer/songwriter in New York. This outfit is inspired by the steampunk style without going overboard; we got the classic black and white colors, the leather, and the glasses, perfect for wherever your adventures may take you. I haven’t seen anyone do steampunk and not look like a dork, which makes this outfit all the more dope.

Anonymous asked: I really love the neon-soled shoe look, but I don't want to spend more than $100. What are some options?

I love those too. Try searching for “contrast soles” or “neon soles” on Ebay. They have these New Womens Flat Vintage Brogues Contrast Sole Loafers Shoes or example, for about $30. ASOS makes a Maybe Leather Brogues with Contrast Sole, available here for $69.50, and a Bobbie Burns Chucky Colored Sole Suede Shoe, on sale here for $98.59 (pictured above).  JCrew has a Boys’ Suede Bucks with Contrast Sole, available here for $98. Sperry Topsider makes a bunch of boat shoes with neon soles for $90. Anyone else got anything?

Anonymous asked: I'm on the quest for dapper shoes (at the moment: brogues and boat shoes) that come in women's/boy's sizes and are also vegetarian! Any tips?

Rae says: As far as boat shoes, Sperry Topsider has a great selection of canvas boat shoes in boy’s and women’s sizes.

Brogues are a little more difficult. I would almost never suggest anyone get synthetic shoes. They tend to fall apart easily and create a lot of waste. If you can appease your conscience I would recommend a pair of really well made vintage leather brogues.

If you really cannot stand to wear leather shoes, Novacas makes great looking, cruelty-free men’s shoe that go all the way down to a size 6 (women’s 8).

Dykifying for Fall

Natalie (http://nattyv.tumblr.com/) just makes me want to take a nice walk through the breezy fall weather and reflect upon the fact that I’m not in school. Since her glasses pop out, she made a smart decision to have more simple pieces in her wardrobe. Also, she is yet another example of a femme who looks queer by incorporating the accent pieces: vests and suspenders; two things every queer girl should have in her wardrobe. Slip ‘em on, and you’re instantly dykified.

Her watch is from Target and glasses are from a specialty eyeglass place in Kansas.

  • Black Button-up: Old Navy
  • Plaid Vest: Thrifted
  • Jeans: Gap
