Indochino + Qwear Shopping Event, Mon Apr 15 5-7 PM

image

Exciting news! Indochino loved my post so much that they invited us to come enjoy wine and fittings with them on their final day in Boston, Monday, April 15! Come join me from 5 to 7pm to get fitted, drink wine, and hang out.

RSVP to sonia@qwearfashion.com or on Facebook
If you would like to get fitted, they ask that you please book an appointment during that time slot as well to reserve your spot at indochino.com/boston

Indochino also wanted me to clarify that they only make traditional men’s suits, (boxy, padded shoulders, etc.) and not traditional women’s, even though they will fit them to anyone. If you are looking for a more androgynous look or for something that hugs curves, they might not be for you. (But you should still come hang out with us anyway!)

I can’t wait!!

See you then, ‘mos

Anonymous asked: I'm a "bridesmaid" in a wedding this fall. My best friend from 6th grade is the bride; we're still close but no longer BFF. She's totally down with me wearing a suit, but I'm bored with black and grey. I want to match the color of the bridesmaids dresses: bright orange, pink and blue (poppy, azalea, and cobalt, shall we say?) Any leads on where a teensy queermo can find a bright colored suit with menswear tailoring that doesn't look like something a career girl would wear to the office? Thanks!

Topman has amazing suit colors and their sizes will fit all the tiny queermos! - Sonia

Indochino’s Traveling Tailor is Ready for the Queers!

Indochino Traveling Tailor Boston

I was blown away by Indochino’s beautiful Traveling Tailor shop in Boston that I visited with Fit For a Femme last week. It was like the Apple store of suits. Priced in the $400 range, they offer the softest fabrics and choices of lapel style, number of buttons, pocket style (note: pocket flaps can always be tucked in. May as well get them and have the option!), linings, rounded vests, and contrast button stitching, to name a few!

Here are some photos from their shop, all courtesy of Fit For a Femme! The femme’s wife M got fitted for a suit as well, so stay tuned for part 2 of the Indochino experience on FFAF’s blog

The traveling tailor is in Boston until April 15th as part of their North America tour. Since I love Indochino and I want to make sure you all feel comfortable going to them, I gave them a heads up that some of you might visit one of their traveling tailor stores. All you have to do is tell them you are from Qwear, and they will ask you for your pronouns and preferred language for the fitting. They are are super excited to have you there. Don’t live in Boston? They might visit your city soon. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

If you are able to make it, let us know how it goes!

Interview with Mary Going, Founder of Saint Harridan

Helllllo Qwearlings! Many of you may have already jumped on the Saint Harridan bandwagon, but for those who are new to the world of fashion boihood, Saint Harridan is a growing company that intends to make suits for women/butches/bois/transmen/etc. Rather than custom-making each suit like many queer companies, they on mass producing them and make them more affordable and accessible. If all works out according to plan, every Joe queer and their boyfriend will be filling the streets and offices in amazingly tailored suits.

Right now they are recruiting models with a diversity of sizes, races, ages, and genders. And you can be one! Submit an entry here. They will visit each city that gets 100 applicants, and those with the most votes will get tickets to their pop-up fashion shows and some other sweet prizes! (Yours truly submitted in Boston! Vote for me here!)

I had some additional questions for Saint Harridan, so I decided to interview their founder,  Mary Going, and get more scoop on the suit construction, the growth of her business, and how we can help get those suits on the shelves.

In your latest blog entry, you discussed the elements of a great suit for a Saint’s body. How do you intend on working around curves for a perfectly fitted suit jacket with no darts?

What I mean by “no extra darts:” Men’s suits are designed to protect the body. They have an outer layer, an inner lining; and between those two layers, in the chest area, a third layer which is actually called “armor.” They are designed as if going into battle. It’s not about the body; it’s about the man. Our suits are built to make the suit about the wearer and not about their body. We are not anti-breasts or anti-hips; we are simply designing so that the wearer can step into the power of their body.

And, what plans do you have for creating trousers for people with hips?

Similarly, the trousers are designed to allow the wearer to move and function. The pants will have functional pockets, will not highlight hips or curves, and will be designed so that if you gain or lose a few pounds, you can alter them. Rather than giving them away, or having them sit in the “someday” section of your closet.

How are the suits going to be constructed?

Anyone with enough money can have a custom suit made. But, most people won’t, even if they do have the money. They’ve never done it before; they don’t know what to expect, and it can be intimidating, particularly if they’re also having to cross gender boundaries to do it. The revolution is in making suits accessible. I’m interested in the revolution. Saint Harridan’s suits are made ready-to-wear. They will be sewn in factories where the workers are treated and paid fairly. (We can’t have a revolution while exploiting other people!)

You’ve also discussed investors not believing that you’d have enough customers to be a successful business. What are 5 things we can do to show that we exist and help Saint Harridan get started?

Thanks for asking this question! We are pre-selling our first signature suit via a Kickstarter campaign which starts on November 23. On November 23rd, you can do these things:

1. Buy a suit! Or, buy just the trousers, shirt or jacket.
2. If a suit is out of your price range, pledge a smaller amount of money and get a tee shirt, tie, tie clip or any number of other great rewards.
3. Post the Kickstarter campaign on your Facebook page, Tumblr site, etc.
4. Personally email everyone you know who might remotely be interested in this idea.
5. Post to every queer/trans/butch/stud email list or web site you can think of.

Thank you! These five things will help us tremendously. Lots of people say to me “it’s finally time somebody did this.” And, I’m SO excited to do it. Manufacturing a clothing line requires a good bit of money. For example, it costs about $12,000 to develop a suit from scratch — just to get it ready to produce. Imagine if you add a sweater (or 3!), a vest, shoes, many different cuts of the suit, etc. This adds up pretty quickly, and we still haven’t actually produced anything — we’ve just gotten to the “ready” phase.

What kinds of suit customizations are you planning on offering?

It’s important to me that Saint Harridan provide suits for a wide range of sizes. I naively thought when I first started this project that there were standard sizes, and I’d do the whole range, making sure to have every size. What I’ve learned, though, is that there are 6 billion people on our planet, and therefore 6 billion different body shapes. No two bodies are alike. We will offer a wide range of sizes — but for some people, their suits will need a bit of tweaking in order to fit perfectly. We can do that tweaking for them, or help them find a tailor in their area who can do it for them.

Will you be designing suits for every model? And will the winners get to keep the suits?

Models in the pop-up stores will be modeling the ready-to-wear/off-the-rack suits that we’re producing. Each model will get Saint Harridan schwag, discounts on all our merchandise, entry into the fashion shows (or perhaps the chance to be IN the fashion show) and professional (digital) photographs of themselves modeling the suits.

The Style Manual: Fashion Council to the Rescue

I’m so thrilled that I was invited to join Autostraddle’s Style Council. Check out my advice about finding men’s suits that fit!

Anonymous asked: I want to get a suit, but I've never worn one before, and I don't know where to start. I'm too small to fit normal men's sizes. Help! I also don't have a ton of money to get something super-expensive, though I recognize that a suit worth wearing will cost more than most of my clothes, and I can handle that. I do know that I'd rather avoid polyester or other synthetic materials.

My suit is from Topman, and their sizes run really small. Their pants go down to 28S and their suit jackets go down to 34. Their cheapest suits right now, such as the Black Two Button Slim Suit, are $250. (See me wearing mine).

If that is still too big, try boy’s suits! The pants will probably be too short, so you might have to mix their pants with the men’s equivalent in that brand and then get them tailored if they are too big. For the jacket, look for ones that fit your sleeve length and shoulders. Often with boy’s clothing it will then be too wide, so you will have to get a tailor bring in the sides.

Anyone else have ideas?

Justin Bieber’s Grown-Up Style

I’m not a stalker or anything, but I’m a pretty big Bieber fan. Kick-ass live acoustic renditions of his own songs aside, I’m really inspired by his style. I mean, I’m a total homo. How could I not be? Now that he’s honing a more grown-up sound in Believe, Justin’s style is turning into that of an older and hotter lesbian. The kid stole our swag, and the game’s not up. 1 Point for Team Justin, 10 Points for Team Qwear.

The “Boyfriend” Outfit. Don’t know where he got the button-up, but it would be easy to pick up a lightweight shirt like it at H&M or similar stores.

Blazer $1,645, shirt, $345, and tie, $175 by Dolce & Gabbana. Tie bar by The Tie Bar. I’ll take the tie bar.

I’m in love with this. The label on the side of the sweater suggests that it is Scotch and Soda brand, but I can’t find this exact sweater online. The backpack would be a harder one to pin, but it reminds me of styles I’ve seen at Diesel, with a fancy non-traditional strap design. (source: thejustinbiebershrine.com)

UPDATE 9/20/12: Exciting news! A reader named Alex commented to tell us that the sweatshirt comes from Boxfresh. It is called the Halle Varsity Jumper. It is no longer available in Blue, but it is quite affordable at $52.

Rocking the Sally Jessy Raphael look. Similar to these are the Clear Lens Buddy Wayfarer Glasses, available at Amazon for $4.99

Feel like your outfit is a bit dull? Throw some neon yellow midtops into the mix! “Fresh” SUPRA Society Mid, available at Supra for $110 (source: solecollector.com)

Also don’t know what he’s wearing here, but it’s an easy look to recreate. Jeans, black Supra, watch, white tee, olive green jacket, and swag. (source: www.forbes.com)

My Suit Has Arrived!

I present to you: the culmination of menswear for female bodied people.

Or in other words, AHHHHHH$%^&! MY SUIT CAMMEEE

The rarity of finding men’s clothes that fit me speaks to this momentous occasion. I got it at Topman, the UK brand that’s closest store to me is in New York. The pants are snug and conform well to my lady-thighs and the crotch area doesn’t even look like there’s too much extra room. The jacket bunches up a tad in the middle because of my hips, but the shoulders are the right width and the jacket is the right length. I will take it in and see what a tailor can do about that (and keep you guys updated!)

Toman's suit

Topman’s clothes seem to be tailored for skinny guys. Everything is smaller and even some of the XXS’ are too small for me! I think the closet American Equivalent is H&M, but they only have a few XS sizes sprinkled around and those are still a tad roomie on me.

I’d also recommend just getting the pants if you are looking for men’s dress pants but not a whole suit. Here’s some light gray ones for $50.

My success with this suit demonstrates what my blog is all about: finding clothes that work for queers out of our limited options. I feel like hott stuff in it and I’m really proud to own it. Spread this around, because this suit is really an incredible find.

Special thanks to Georgie who originally told me about them!
