Anonymous asked: Thanks to you guys I found out how awful Urban Outfitters is. I had actually recently ordered black pants from them because I needed work pants. But then my conscience got to me and I sent them back and wrote as my return reason: "your company donates to anti equality campaigns. I will know longer support you because you do not support me." I know I can't afford to be the perfect consumer, but it's good to know some basic ways I can make a difference.

Yesss! Good for you!

London Style: Now We Know Where Hipsters Get Their Clothes

queer london style

By guest blogger, Courtney

Hey Qwearlings! I got back from London after spending January there for a Theatre course (liberal arts, y’all). London street fashion seems like the origination of certain hipster styles in the US. Going into most London stores, I found myself drooling over almost every item of hipster-tastic duds, and found myself back in America at the end of the month with a significantly heavier suitcase and significantly lighter wallet.

I asked a few of my friends who came on my trip to represent some of the awesome fashion we saw there.

For starters: TOP-BUTTON SWAG. Literally everywhere. You’ll notice that we are all apparently wearing the same shirt. This is because we are, in fact, wearing the same shirt. We found an amazing store called Primark, which is apparently something like the British Walmart meets Forever 21. There were so many of these short sleeve printed beauties that we, plus two more of our friends, each own two, and none of them are the same. Printed shirts seem to be pretty big, but less plaid (like in the US) and more different prints like the fleur de lis, dots, and birds.

Something else the British seem to love is colored trousers. Andy and I are both wearing pants from— wait for it— Primark! And in the store there were stacks on stacks of colored pants in various fabrics and fits. Most pants on the street, however, are very much slim fit. In fact, I would say most of the London street style I observed was slim fit.

Other things I saw: crew neck sweaters and sweatshirts, beanies, black boots (like mine and Andy’s), black jeans. And blazers. Going to a club in London, I asked my English friend what guys usually wore when going out. The reply was, “Suits.” And it was true. Tons of slim cut slim lapelled suits, or blazers over tanks with slim cotton pants. Swoon! Check out Topman for more examples of this sort of style.

Pacsun: The Perfect Men’s Jean Sag

Lots of folks have been asking about the perfect saggy jean. Though Kayla’s body type lends itself more willingly to this look, Pacsun’s men’s jeans have now been recommended several times by people of varying shapes. Pacsun jeans seems to be a favorite among the queers.

And, I love that backpack. For a non-backstabbing brand with a similar look, try Everlane!

Suede Sneakers for a Tomboy

Another ensemble I so need to try, from our friend Teresa. This is a really nice way to work in a button-up with a more casual outfit. And I love those blue suede sneakers she’s wearing  way more low key than your usual athletic sneakers. A similar alternative to UO are the PF Flyers Center Lo Suede

Our latest favorite 68-notes-and-counting cutesicle is back with more hot gay male inspired outfits. Heads are turning. Fuck Yeah Queer Pomps is reblogging. Sonia is considering adding a 14th sweater to her closet just to keep up.

Dr. Martens: The Legacy Comes With A Price

Anonymous asked: I have been drooling over Doc Marten’s for a while now but have realized they are very expensive! Do you know which Doc’s are the best ones to get? And do you know of any sites or stores where they may be sold at sale prices? I want to save up for a pair but not really sure which place would be best to buy them from.

I know, right?? I was feeling some up the other day and then compared them to some H&M knock-offs, and just reminded me of how well these things are constructed. Their classic air-cushioned rubber soles will probably last a decade. And the sole is welted, meaning it has a strip of leather that is stitched between the sole and the upper part of the shoe:

Welting (source: dmusastore.com)

As opposed to other shoe constructions, which just glue them together. (Urban Outfitters, I will never forgive you for the time your sole FELL OFF MY SHOE WHILE I WAS WALKING.)

My current favorites are the classic smooth leather mid-height ones:

Navy Smooth Boots, available at dmusastore.com for $120.

And I’m also crushing on these felt ones:

Navy Felt 8 Tie Beckett Boots, available at ssense.com for $175.00

Past Qwearlings have recommended their Tobias boots and boys’ shoes, which I also thought looked fabulous on them. So in terms of which ones to get, that’s really up to your personal style.

I would probably try them on to get your size and then buy them on Ebay. To get them new, you’ll still be paying around $90. Used, I saw some on there for $40. I’d also see if you’re into any of the ones currently on sale on the Dr. Martens site. DSW has a few in good prices too. If you’re near a DSW, it never hurts to go in and see what shoes they have for sale in your size.

Queers and everyone: What are your favorite Doc Martens?

Annie’s Fall Boots

Annie is back to show us her latest number, complete with some brown boots. Boots are an excellent casual and classy alternative to sneakers. Blake is really into Clarks desert boots, and I don’t think those will ever go out of style. A.D.’s latest thing are Chukkas. I would pretty much go crazy for any of J. Crew’s selection.

Anonymous asked: Okay, so, here goes: I am a "femme" lesbian, always have been, but I'm so tired of being misread as straight. I do want to look "more gay," but when I try, I kind of just end up looking...ridiculous - probably because I am very petite but with a relatively large chest and butt. Ugh. What are some women's stores where I can find edgy/"gay" clothes? Anything besides Urban Outfitters?

A.D. says: Sometimes, people with penises misread me as ‘straight’ (? this is weird…) because I have long hair, so I understand your frustration that you feel not-visible/not being read as a gay-mo. One sure-fire way to make sure others know you’re a big ‘mo (aka homo) is the rainbow. Wear a rainbow pin or bracelet. Other ways are “gay” shirts.

As far as stores, I buy everything at thrift stores/free stores/clothing swaps because I can afford the clothes AND I’m not actively participating in the traditional clothing economy, which relies on the exploitation of children and women internationally. I would suggest starting at those stores… Other than that, “gay” fashion is so geographically-specific. I like H&MJ.Crew, ASOS, TopShop, ModCloth, Etsy, etc. Good luck!

Adorable Queer Alert

Not sure what I love most about this. Her asymmetrical hair framing her face? Her bow tie? Oh, and queers: if you are feeling reluctant about wearing suspenders because they haven’t looked good in the past, try suspenders of different widths, or try adjusting where you attach them to your pants. Amy’s are clipped on fairly far apart, which looks really great on her. But you can figure out the best place for you. Because I truly believe that everyone can look adorable in them. See the suspenders tag for more queerspiration.
